My Tempus carbon fibre drums
Back then I was itching to finally get my "pro" drumset, during that time the custom drum craze was in full swing, with companies like Conaway, Dunnett, Adonis, Epik, OCDP, SPAUN, RD, etc. offering everything under the sun to carve out their slice of the pie, and I was determined to have my own.
I knew I wasn't the most careful person in the world so I wanted something durable, and the Tempus drums appealed to me greatly because of their construction and ultra low-weight. I have played and recorded on a few Tempus fiberglass drumsets by then with positive results, and imagined the CarbonFibre version could only get better. The CF set was everything I wanted, and the sound... is pure boomblastic.
Check out the shell. 3mm thin.
After endless nights of dreaming up different configurations in my head I finally decided on the Tempus Carbon Fibre set, in 10x8, 13x9, 16x15, and 22x16. I opted for those sizes to cover the full spectrum of high's-mid's-low's and thump with my limited budget, and those sizes worked perfectly. If I had my way I would've wanted a 10-13-16-18-24 kick that would mean a lot of extra expense in not-so-standard cases and drumheads and etc. , but over the years I've never felt the need for a 24" or an 18" in any gig settings.
The next question, however, stems quite far from the logical realm : What colour? I wanted something that stands out on stage, but yet classy enough to not go the way of plaid jackets in 2 years' time. It came down to between an ice-like white glitter with blue glitter accents , and the Tangerine glitter. Neither of these colours had been made by Tempus Drums before so I only had my gut reaction to rely on. Well you saw my end decision and the Tangerine just screams and you can spot it from a mile away. However once in a while I do wonder if I had taken the ice-pill instead...
Oh check out the carbon fibre weave.
The drums sounds great and perfect for live because of the resonance and attack, I've had soundguys come up to me after shows and asks what mics I was using, when there were actually none.
Behind the driver's seat the sound is a bit tympani-like, some might call it un focused and "not punchy enough", but out in the audience? It's so loud and clear it's like you're mic'd.
And they just. won't. choke. Great drums.
I heard Paul Mason has decided to pass on the company to the next worthy successor, I wish Tempus Drums all the best. Because I've been itching to try some other sizes with a natural carbon fibre outer finish.
So at long last, I've churned out the write up for my custom Tempus Carbon Fibre drumset.
It was built by Paul Mason of Tempus Drums in 2002. Looks and sounds wonderful... but perhaps a bit
